Debilitating Symptoms of Depression

When we talk about health, we often neglect mental health. Mental health is not only a serious issue on its own merits, but mental illness also negatively affects one’s physical health, as well. If you or someone you know suffers from a mental illness, such as depression, there are a number of ways you can fight it without dealing the stigma attached to visiting a psychiatrist or therapist. (Which, by the way, I still highly recommend.) Here are a few ways to cope with the debilitating symptoms of depression.

Depression Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

It sounds simple, but taking a walk does wonders for the mood. Scientific data shows that taking a walk can alleviate depression and anxiety, and it also boosts creativity. However, you can’t get these same benefits from walking in place on a treadmill. The change of scenery you get from walking from place to place is the reason for these benefits, so you need to go out to experience them.

Another way to alleviate depression is exercise. While taking a walk is a form of exercise, it’s not really what I mean here. More rigorous exercises that get your heart rate up and cause you sweat also cause the release of endorphins, which, in turn, can improve your mood. Not to mention the boost of energy you get you from working out, which also helps you feel better.

Lastly, you can take a break from your day to day life. Going away for awhile will allow you to clear your head, so taking a vacation is a great way to send your symptoms packing. Consider taking a trip to the beach, or you could go sailing. In general, a relaxing vacation with a soothing oceanic backdrop will do wonders for your mood.
